How much funding has been allocated to revitalise Flinders Street Station?
The State Government has committed $100 million to restore and refresh the iconic Flinders Street Station.
The project will involve works within Flinders Street Station to preserve this key Melbourne landmark and make it easier for commuters, visitors and tourists to use the station.
What is the timing of the project?
The early works commenced in September 2015, while further improvements to the customer experience at the station will begin in 2016 and be completed by mid-2018.
The main works will include refreshing and restoring the station and expanding access at the station to counter pedestrian congestion.
Works to the exterior of the Administration Building will commence in 2016 and are expected to be complete by late 2017.
Who is carrying out heritage restoration works of the Administration Building Exterior?
Australian construction company Built Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to restore the exterior of Flinders Street Station’s historic Administration Building.
The works will see the building's roof repaired, structure stabilised and made watertight. Built Pty Ltd will take great care to ensure the building’s historic features are preserved.
What are the works that will deliver a better customer experience?
Customer experience works will improve customer flow and the overall experience at the station. Planning and designs are progressing well, and the main works will include:
- Station wide refresh and restoration
o cleaning, painting, tiling and upgrades to platform lighting
o refurbishing toilet facilities
o revamping ticket services across the station
o de-cluttering platforms to improve passenger capacity
o improved passenger information and the installation of new information displays
o implementing new wayfinding to make it easier to get around
- Expanding access to the station to counter pedestrian congestion by;
o redesigning and extending the concourse along Swanston Street
o improving access at the western end and Degraves Subway
o improvements to the main entrance
Why is a heritage permit required for the Flinders Street Station Upgrade?
The Flinders Street Railway Station Complex is included in the Victorian Heritage Register for its historical, aesthetic, architectural, technical and social significance to the State of Victoria.
A permit is required to ensure that any alterations respect and help protect the important features of heritage places and objects.
