Passengers can now catch a glimpse of Flinders Street Station's original 1910 colour with the first repainted section now complete.

The original paint scheme is a cream and red combination and can be seen above Platform 1 beneath the clock tower.
This is the first time in nearly 100 years that the station has looked this way as its architects, Fawcett and Ashworth, originally intended.
The building’s external windows and doors have also been restored to their original colour, a deep blue green.
To determine the original colours, a detailed forensic analysis was carried out using sampling and analysis of the existing paint layers to establish their composition and the sequence of application.
More than 5,000 litres of paint will be used to repaint the station.
As the scaffolding gradually comes down over the next few months the station will be revealed restored to its former grandeur.

Anyone familiar with Melbourne’s CBD recognises the sight of the Flinders Street Station clock tower overlooking Elizabeth Street or rising above the Yarra River from Southbank.

The iconic clock powered down this week in order for refurbishment works to proceed as a part of the Flinders Street Station Upgrade project.

The clock will stop running while contractors stabilise the clock tower’s structure, giving renewed life to a historic feature eon Melbourne’s cityscape.

The clock will re-started in early 2018.

The current clock was built by Melbourne clock maker F. Zeigler and was installed in 1907.
While the clock can be hand wound, today it is electronically powered.

The Flinders Street Station Upgrade is being delivered in two concurrent programs: repair and restoration to the administration building, and works to improve the customer experience.

Scaffolding has been installed on Flinders Street at the western end of the Administration Building, to enable extensive restoration works.

These works will include repairs to the façade of the iconic building and repainting it to its original 1910 colours.

The scaffolding has been placed above the station awning, supported by ground-level towers running along the building’s northern façade.

For the safety of the public and workers, a construction zone is fenced off underneath the scaffolding, which reaches just over a metre from the building.

Shops along the Flinders Street side of the Administration Building will be open throughout the works, and pedestrians can still use the footpath, although it is now narrower.

Scaffolding had already been installed on the Platform 1 side of the Administration Building to allow roof replacement, waterproofing and painting works to be carried out.

The scaffolding on both sides of the Administration Building will remain in place until 2018.

Minister for Major Project and Public Transport Jacinta Allan announced today that Flinders Street Station will be restored to its original 1910 colours.

The current mustard colour will become a lighter, stone colour, while the maroon sections and green trimmings will be darkened, to reflect the station’s appearance when it first opened more than 100 years ago.

Flinders Street has been repainted five times since the early 1900s. Determining the original colours involved detailed forensic analysis by the University of Melbourne, to peel back the layers and find the original paint.

Repainting will happen in sections, and is expected to be complete by the end of next year.

As well as repairing and restoring Flinders Street Station’s façade, the $100 million upgrade will fix the leaky roof, upgrade the entrances and make the busy station more functional for passengers.

Work is already well underway. The toilets on the main concourse have been refurbished, better lighting has been installed on the platforms and repairs have begun on the administrative building.

The project is expected to be complete in 2018.
